What Is It? How Is It Used?
When you’ve had any type of blow or bump to the head, one of the tools commonly used by medical professionals to diagnose your condition and track your recovery is an electroencephalogram, or EEG. What is an EEG and why do doctors use them? What types of conditions are they typically used to diagnose and treat?
What Is an Electroencephalogram?
An EEG measures the electrical activity in your brain. Your brain cells emit electrical impulses at all times, when you’re awake or when you’re sleeping. The test uses small metal discs or electrodes, which are attached to your scalp. The electrodes produce wavy lines on a screen to help diagnose brain disorders.
Why Will a Doctor Prescribe an EEG?
An EEG, unlike x-rays or MRIs (which produce a fixed image), measures changes in your brain activity. It’s commonly used to determine whether a person suffers from epilepsy or has a seizure disorder. It can also be used to diagnose or treat a number of other conditions, including:
- Brain damage, dysfunction or illness, including tumors
- Sleep disorders
- Stroke
- Inflammation or swelling on the brain
An EEG is typically a low-risk and painless procedure. The electrodes do not emit any sensations, but are in place only to record brain waves.
