Falls from Heights | Slips, Trips, and Falls | Falling Objects | Work-Related Motor Vehicle Accidents
According to a study conducted in 2016, about one of every four traumatic brain injuries occurs in the workplace. While the majority of those TBIs (about 75%) are mild, they can still have serious consequences. According to statistics compiled by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), virtually all of the traumatic brain injuries sustained on the job involve one of the following four types of accident:
- Falls from heights—These accidents commonly involve a fall from a ladder or scaffolding but may also involve falls from the upper levels of a construction site or elevated areas in a factory or other industrial setting
- Slips, trips, and falls—Virtually any workplace can pose risks of tripping or falling over tools, materials, inventory, machinery, cables, trash, or other debris. In addition, some work environments are conducive to wet or slippery floors or other surfaces.
- Falling objects—Workers in a wide range of occupations can be at risk of head trauma from falling objects, including construction or factory workers hurt by falling tools or materials and warehouse employees injured due to improperly stacked inventory.
- Work-related motor vehicle accidents—The National Institutes of Health, in a 2022 study, found that about 14% of all TBIs are sustained in car, truck, or motorcycle accidents. Furthermore, you can suffer traumatic brain injury in a collision while going at a relatively low speed and with minimal impact, typically as a consequence of whiplash.
Taking Steps to Maximize Your Safety at Work
To reduce the risk of traumatic brain injury on the job, you can:
- Make certain you use all appropriate safety gear, including hardhats, at all times.
- Demand that your employer establish and enforce safety guidelines.
- Refuse to work if others are not employing established safety measures.
- Make certain that you participate in all company safety training and briefings.
