Maximizing Your Ability to Function as You Heal
With most concussions and other minor traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), you can expect full recovery within a few weeks to a couple of months. While your brain is healing, though, you may experience difficulties with your memory, with concentration and with other day-to-day things. Here are some recommendations to help you function at the highest levels as your brain heals.
- Keep a pencil and paper with you at all times—In the days and weeks after a bump or blow to the head, you can have issues with your short-term memory. One of the best ways to deal with that is to write things down. You can also send yourself emails or text messages or leave yourself a voicemail.
- Get into a solid routine—The more predictable your life is, the less difficulty you’ll have staying on course. Get up at the same time and go to bed at the same time every day (within a few minutes). Schedule meals at the same time, and find other ways to bring stability to your daily routine.
- Focus on healthy coping mechanisms—You can expect to be a little impulsive while you’re healing from a head injury. Don’t use drugs or alcohol to level your mood. Be aware of other compulsive behaviors, such as overeating or binge spending, that can have negative repercussions.
- Surround yourself with people who will support you in your recovery—Having a network of friends and family available when you need them can make a huge difference. Get commitments from specific people who can immediately respond when you experience anxiety or moments of stress. Put together a “safety plan” to deal with any crisis that may arise.
