How Soon Should You Become Physically Active after a TBI?
Though one of the common recommendations doctors make to patients who have suffered a traumatic brain injury is rest, there’s much scientific evidence to suggest that physical exercise can help accelerate both physical and mental recovery after a head injury. How soon should you attempt to go back to a pre-injury level of activity? The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) has published some guidelines.
The Baseline Recommendations
The ACSM suggests that persons who have suffered a traumatic brain injury should, after an initial period of rest (which will vary based on the severity of the injury), engage in exercise three-to-five times pers week. That exercise should last anywhere from 20 to 60 minutes per session, and should generally consist of moderate forms of physical activity, such as walking, swimming or using a stationary bicycle. The intensity of the workout will depend on the individual’s particular abilities.
In the immediate aftermath of a TBI or concussion, your primary concern will likely be loss of strength or muscle tone from inactivity, or loss of range of motion. Accordingly, some of your first exercises should focus on retaining muscle mass, as well as promoting flexibility.
Additionally, physical inactivity can quickly lead to loss of energy or stamina. A cardiovascular workout can help you avoid fatigue or lethargy. When you’re just starting a cardiovascular program, engage in lighter exercise for a longer period of time. As your strength and endurance improve, you can participate in a more strenuous workout for a shorter period of time.
Strength training is also beneficial for persons who have suffered any type of head injury. The ACSM recommends 8-10 exercises three days a work (on non-consecutive days). Light weight lifting will do more than build or maintain muscle—it can also stimulate bone density and growth, lower your blood sugar and help you avoid unnecessary weight gain.
