How Can You Minimize the Risk of a TBI?
When you’ve had a bump or blow to the head, it’s fairly common to experience some dizziness, vertigo or challenges with your balance. That’s not a surprise, as you may have some swelling or inflammation in your brain that adversely affects the mechanisms in your body that help you maintain stability when standing, walking or running.
How Long Does Dizziness Typically Last after a Concussion?
As a general rule, most people who report some level of dizziness after a bump or blow to the head have those symptoms for less than two weeks. In most situations, that vertigo or difficulty with balance/stability will go away without any specialized medical treatment. It is important, though, in the days and weeks following a concussion or traumatic brain injury, that you avoid strenuous activity or engaging in behavior that could put you at risk of another blow to the head.
What Should You Do If Dizziness Persists More than a Couple Weeks?
If your challenges with vertigo or balance continue for more than two weeks, you should immediately make an appointment with your primary care physician, who will have the tools and resources to perform the necessary assessment. Based on your doctor’s findings, you may receive treatment in his or her office, or you may be referred to a specialist, such as a neurologist or a physiatrist.
Tips for Staying Safe When You Are Suffering from Vertigo or Dizziness
If you are experiencing any kind of lightheadedness, mental confusion, fog, balance or similar issues, you should:
- Make certain there is someone to assist you when you get out of bed or stand up from a chair or other seat
- Avoid sudden movements, if possible
- Use a walker, crutches or a wheelchair until the dizziness goes away
- Make certain there’s good lighting everywhere you go
