Cutting Edge Technology Shows Promise for Improved Cognitive Function
In the aftermath of a traumatic brain injury, much of the medical care can typically focus on alleviating symptoms, while letting the brain and body take care of much of the healing. Therapies typically focus on helping improve cognitive skills, such as concentration, focus and memory, and on ways to minimize mood swings, sensitivity to light and sound, and changes in sleep patterns.
In recent years, though, scientists and medical professionals have been exploring technologies that may actually repair or heal brain injuries. One of the most promising is a process referred to as “near-infrared light therapy,” or NILT.
What Is NILT?
Light is emitted in waves. When those wavelengths are between approximately 400 and 700 nanometers, the light is visible to the human eye. Those light waves that are between about 750 nanometers and 1,000 nanometers (invisible to the human eye) are commonly referred to as “infrared waves” or “infrared light.” One of the characteristics of such light is the ability to pass through certain objects, such as bones. Accordingly, “near-infrared light,” in the range of 800-900 nanometers, will permeate the human skull.
How Does Near-Infrared Light Therapy Work?
The procedure involves the placement of low-power lasers or light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on the patient’s head, which penetrate the skull and interact with the brain. Scientists don’t fully understand exactly what happens during that process, but know that it generates a substance known as ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which the body uses for fuel or energy. Furthermore, the near-infrared light doesn’t simply pass through the brain. It is absorbed in brain cells and continues to generate more ATP.
Has NILT Shown Promise?
Yes. In initial trials, conducted on animals, researchers concluded that NILT caused the repair and recovery of damaged brain tissue. When tested with humans, the therapy was shown to promote cognitive function, though the positive results were not immediate. Studies found that patients who had multiple treatments over a four-week period showed measurable improvement.
