The Events that Can Cause a TBI
According to statistics gathered by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), more than three million people seek medical treatment every year for some type of brain injury. Most of those TBIs are mild to moderate, and most people who suffer those types of traumatic brain injuries can expect a full recovery. You may have suffered a traumatic brain injury, even if you never lost consciousness. It’s essential, then, that you seek medical care immediately. Your primary care physician has the tools to make an initial diagnosis and either prescribe treatment or refer you to the necessary specialist.
What Are the Different Types/Causes of Traumatic Brain Injury?
Technically, a traumatic brain injury is any type of brain injury that results from an external source. Though the term may suggest that a traumatic brain injury requires a significant impact or blow to the head, that is not the case. A TBI may result from:
- The impact of your head/brain with a foreign (and often stationary object), such as a windshield, door, steering wheel or other item—You can also suffer a traumatic brain injury if struck in the head by a foreign object, such as a ball, bat, or tool. Even a minor blow to your head can lead to a serious TBI.
- The penetration of your skull by a foreign object—A sharp stick, a metal rod or a bullet can pierce the protective layer provided by your skull, leading to what is known as an “open head” wound
- Whiplash—Most common in motor vehicle accidents, this involves the sudden and violent snapping back and forth of your neck and head. This may cause your brain to careen off the inside of your skull, causing serious injury.
- Severe shaking of the head—Often the source of traumatic brain injury in infants and small children, this may lead to a tearing of nerve tissue, as well as bruising and bleeding in the brain from impact with the inside of the skull
