The Early Warning Signs of a Traumatic Brain Injury
How to Know When It’s More than Just a Bump on the Noggin
We all bang our heads on something from time to time…bending over to pick something up off the ground, opening a car door, having something fall when we open a cabinet or cupboard. More often than not, we simply shake it off and go about our business. But when should we pay closer attention to the possibility of a traumatic brain injury? What are some of the telltale early warning signs that we ought to seek medical attention?
The Early Warning Signs of a Traumatic Brain Injury
With virtually any bump or blow to the head, it’s common to experience a headache and some stiffness in your neck and shoulders. The telltale signs of a traumatic brain injury, though, will typically have additional physical, cognitive and/or emotional symptoms:
- A TBI can cause tearing, bruising or bleeding in the brain. The physical symptoms include a headache that persists or gets worse, vomiting or nausea, blurred vision, uncharacteristic sensitivity to sound or light, or difficulty with balance
- A TBI can cause bruising or inflammation that affects the function of your brain. The cognitive indications of a potential TBI can include difficulty focusing or concentrating, challenges with long or short-term memory, or a feeling of mental fog or sluggishness
- A TBI can also lead to chemical changes or imbalances in your brain, leading to emotional responses, such as depression, anxiety, anger or irritability
