CDC Statistics Show TBIs to Be Far Too Common
Think a traumatic brain injury is something that happens to someone else? Think again. According to statistics compiled by the Centers of Disease Control, more than 210,000 people were hospitalized in 2020 because of some type of TBI. That’s nearly 600 admissions per day nationwide for some type of head trauma. The CDC also logged nearly 70,000 deaths in 2020 attributed to traumatic brain injury, an average of 190 every 24 hours. Furthermore, most experts believe that these numbers substantially understate the actual number of TBIs, as many people who suffer a bump or blow to the head choose not to seek medical attention. Authorities believe that the actual number of traumatic brain injuries suffered nationwide in 2020 was close to 3,000,000.
What Are the Common Causes of Traumatic Brain Injury in the United States?
The data collected by the CDC shows that slips and falls are the most frequent cause of a traumatic brain injury, particularly among senior citizens. Statistics gathered before 2020 found that falls were the causes of approximately 375 of every 1,000 visits to a hospital emergency room. Falls were involved in more than half of all emergency room visits for patients under the age of four and over the age of 75. Falling or flying objects came in second, with just under 150 emergency room visits per thousand and motor vehicle accidents were third, with just over 100 ER visits per thousand.
Who Is At Greater Risk of a Traumatic Brain Injury?
CDC statistics also indicate that certain groups of individuals may be more susceptible to suffering a traumatic brain injury:
- Members of racial and ethnic groups
- Active-duty military personnel and veterans
- Anyone detained or in a correctional facility
- Anyone who is homeless
- Persons who have experienced domestic violence
- Residents of rural areas
