The Likelihood of a Return to Full Physical and Mental Function
Any bump or blow to the head can have significant potential health consequences. Even a mild TBI, often referred to as a concussion, can have a long-term physical and mental impact, though most people who suffer a mild traumatic brain injury make a full recovery within a couple weeks to a couple months. There are, however, certain things you should and shouldn’t do to improve your chances of full recovery.
Taking the Right Steps to Maximize Your Return to Health after a TBI
The first and most important thing you want to do after any type of traumatic brain injury is seek medical attention, even if it’s just a bump on the head. If your injury was relatively mild, the best place to start is your primary care physician, who will have the tools and resources to conduct a thorough assessment and either prescribe a regimen of care or refer you to a specialist, such as a physiatrist or a neurologist.
During the first 5-7 days, unless your doctor tells you otherwise, you should consider taking time away from work or school, so that your brain can rest. You will want to avoid screens, such as computers, television and tablets, and limit your time on a cell phone. Avoid any activity that requires any significant physical or mental exertion.
Ease your way back into your daily activities. If possible, return to work for a few hours and gradually get back to full time. Even if you’re used to being active, take your time returning to full effort workouts. Start with gentle exercise, such as a walk around the block. If you experience any renewed physical or mental symptoms, immediately stop what you’re doing. If your symptoms linger, make another appointment to see your primary care physician.
The Importance of Staying Connected after a TBI
It’s also essential, when you’ve suffered a head injury, to stay connected with friends, family and health care professionals. Your friends and family can objectively assess your progress and help you make the right decisions. Your healthcare provider will ensure that you get all the necessary treatment you need to maximize your recovery.
