How Your Treatment Will Change as You Heal
Healing from a traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a process, with the type and level of care evolving as you heal. You may require care for months or even years, but you can expect the focus of that care to change, based on a variety of factors, such as the severity of your injury, the speed of your recovery and your general health. Let’s look at the stages of care you can anticipate:
Emergency Care in the Immediate Aftermath of Your Injury
Regardless of the severity of the blow or bump to the head, you should immediately seek medical treatment, whether at a hospital emergency room, an urgent care facility or your own personal physician. If your injury does not prevent you from moving about on your own, the best place to obtain care is probably your own doctor, who can conduct a full assessment and either prescribe a regimen of treatment or refer you to a specialist. The focus, though, during this phase of recovery, is on getting an accurate assessment of the full extent of your injury and on minimizing the risk of any further complications.
Acute Care—Moving Forward after Your Condition Has Stabilized
You can expect to be monitored quite closely for a few days or weeks. When it’s clear that the risk of further complications is minimal, you can expect doctors to initiate diagnostic testing to clarify your condition and determine the need for care from any specialists.
Rehabilitation—Helping You Rebuild Cognitive and Motor Skills, If Necessary
When diagnostic testing is done, the focus of your care will shift, so that you start engaging in exercises and actions that facilitate rehabilitation. Depending on the extent of your loss of motor or cognitive skills, you may require physical therapy, rehabilitation or even placement in a rehab facility.
Neurobehavioral Treatment—Helping Manage Behaviors
One of the common consequences of a traumatic brain injury is difficulty controlling behaviors or impulses. There are special rehab units where you’ll be monitored and supervised on a round-the-clock basis, so that you can reestablish the skills to live independently.
