Physical Therapy | Occupational Therapy | Speech Therapy | Behavioral Therapy
When you’ve suffered a head injury and been diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury (TBI), your first course of action, provided you don’t need to go immediately to the hospital, should be to schedule an appointment with your primary care physician, who can either prescribe a regimen of treatment or refer you to a specialist, such as a neurologist or a physiatrist. Typically, your doctor will recommend rest, medication or surgical procedures to respond to the immediate symptoms. However, in the long term, you may need some type of therapy to help you return to maximum health.
The Different Types of Therapy Available to Treat a TBI
As a general rule, there are four different types of therapy commonly prescribed to help individuals improve their health and well-being after a traumatic brain injury:
- Physical therapy-Physical therapy (PT) uses exercises, stretching and different types of devices to focus on helping your rebuild muscle strength and stability, improve range of motion and reduce pain/discomfort. A physical therapist will put together a program to strengthen your core, re-develop hand-eye coordination, and reestablish physical balance.
- Occupational therapy-Often, after a TBI, you may have to relearn many of the basic activities of daily life, including housekeeping, shopping, handling money and paying bills, grooming and dressing, driving, cooking or engaging in hobbies or leisure activities. An occupational therapist can help you relearn all these skills.
- Speech or language therapy-A traumatic brain injury can affect the connection between your brain and your communication skills. A speech or language therapist will help you learn how to understand and effectively respond to communications from others, focusing on both the physical attributes of speech, as well as the cognitive elements of communication.
- Behavioral therapy-A behavioral therapist can help you deal with any psychological and emotional challenges tied to a TBI, including anxiety or depression
